How To Begin Your Search For The Best Nursing Home

First and foremost, a nursing home is a home. In addition to being a roof over someone's head, a nursing home is responsible for providing rehabilitative care, skilled nursing care, medical services, recreation, and personal care, in a safe and supervised environment.

One of the most difficult decisions anyone can make is finding the best nursing home or assisted living facility for someone they love. However, even after they have found the right nursing home their involvement doesn't end. At that point in time the resident's family has to make sure that the staff of the nursing home provides the high quality of care that they are entrusted with providing.

How to Begin Your Search For A Good Nursing Home

Before physically looking for a nursing home you should talk with the person who will be moving there. This will help them to adjust to the major life change that is about to happen. In addition…

• Talk with other members of your family and ask them to help you to find the best nursing home.

• Talk with doctors and nurses - and any other social workers or health professional s- who care about your loved one.

• Talk with a rabbi or a pastor and ask them for their guidance.

• Talk with as many of the nursing home employees as you can. Make sure to talk with the assistants because they are the people who will be responsible for giving most of the care.

• Contact and speak with your long-term care ombudsman.

Your long-term care ombudsman is the person whose responsibility it is to represent the residents of nursing homes. She or he is the one who has to investigate all of the complaints and problems. They are considered to be trusted sources of information.

Volunteer ombudsmen regularly visit the nursing homes in their area. Consequently they can often provide information about how the homes are run and how well they are organized.

Keep in mind though, that although your ombudsman can provide information, he or she cannot recommend a specific nursing home.

Nonetheless, they can give you important information. They can provide the most recent state inspection reports as well as the type and number of complaints that they have received about the homes.

You can also ask your ombudsman for his or her advice as to what you should look for when you visit the nursing homes.

Once you have found what you feel is the best nursing home for your loved one you will need to keep your eyes open when you visit and look for any possible signs of nursing care abuse.

What is the best Nursing program in California?

WHY is the best?? It would help so much, as I have a sister planning to head out to a 4 year college soon.

I don't know about the best school... There are a lot of good schools out here. You can check the NCLEX passing rates at this website:

http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/passrates.htm

It includes both 2-year and 4-year programs, but it'll tell you how many of the graduating students pass the NCLEX on the first try.

The NCLEX is the exam all RN's take to become licensed.
